Urban Mountain Bikers Quest for Singletrack is Met at Fort Dupont

by Deb Merriam

Philadelphia has Wissahickon Valley Park, Boston has the Fells and D.C. has Fort Dupont, 376 rolling acres within the D.C. city limits, and all trails are open to mountain bikes. According to the local single trackers, Fort Dupont offers it all: creek crossings, tough climbs and hair-raising descents and generous tree shade makes this a decent choice for summer rides.   Fort Dupont Park is part of a larger, 12.5-mile gravel-and-single-track trail system known as Fort Circle Parks or the Civil War Defenses of Washington.

Fort Dupont may not be as pristine as many  suburban mountain bike trails but many  local organizations are working to change that perspective. It is best to ride with a buddy and bring a good  trail map. Trails are best in the early spring before undergrowth takes over. Not familiar with the trail? Check Park Service Website for tour updates.
