Brooklyn Bridge Park

by karinabishop

We had an illuminating visit to Brooklyn Bridge Park this past Saturday. One of the most successful aspects of the Park is the ways in which the newly designed natural and recreational environments have seamlessly merged with the former industrial landscape of the piers. The designers at Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates have expertly manipulated the topography of Pier 1, turning it into a hilly enclave, where each side of the mound accomodates a different function. From highest point of Pier 1, your view is pointed in specific directions to better appreciate the vistas of the city. This aspect of the design could be helpful to us in terms of  thinking of ways to better define the views from the earthworks at the Civil War Defense sites.
